Mesmerizing Addiction is the beginning stage of addiction. The apples represent the drugs and the green tongues represent the idea of us. The spiraling green tongues are the influences we feel attracted to, may it be our friends, television and any other sources such as situations. The apples are an idea that says “here take it it’s healthy” and it may look healthy and okay but that’s just a disguise that takes us to that dark place. The ride going down is fun but once in that dark hole is nothing but pain.
American Horror Spirit is my take on PopArt. Right before I painted this piece I was struggling with my smoking addiction, I simply couldn’t stop smoking my American Spirit Black cigarettes. I was having health problems so I became proactive to kick off my habit. I was reading this article that said that the best way to quit smoking is to imagine something gruesome when I was having a craving. So I thought about guts, shit and body explosions, basically scenes from American Horror Story. It worked! I released all of my cravings into this painting.
Political Wall is inspired by what is going on in America. I relate to this piece deeply because I am a Mexican living in Arizona and I see the fear that is being instilled in both countries by President Donald Trump. This wall is meant to be viewed from both sides of the border; On the American side, the President portrays power and world domination and on the Mexican side he portrays fear and anger. On both sides we are scared and we fear for our future. I fear that President Trump is not taking action to take care of our Earth, I fear that he is not making the right relationships with other world leaders, I fear that tomorrow I will not be in this country that I’ve been calling home for more than 20 years. The United States is in fear.
Willing to Die Trying is inspired by a baby chick who I foud dead on the pavement while heading to the gym. On my way to the gym I kept thinking about this poor chick who didn’t make it, there was nothing I could have done, he was dead. But it got me thinking, this little bird didn’t die in vain, he died trying to fly. He was not confined by his nest, I’m sure there was a struggle and it took a lot of courage to make the leap, he was brave. For this reason, I relate it to us, most of us are too afraid to make that leap that will take us to the skies. We want to fly so badly but we still don’t take that leap. This motivated me to make that jump, I am an artist and a while ago I did not value myself as an artist. I decided to take that leap and as simple as it is, what is the worst thing that is going to happen? Death? We are all heading there anyway, that is why I am willing to die trying. Take your leap!
Devour is a take on addiction in the process. Addiction to drugs, addiction to alcohol and addiction to food. Have you ever felt that you can’t stop and that addiction is devouring you? This small red “black hole” represents that drug and that beautiful big planet represents us, how can a small object have this much power over us? We realize when is too late and some of our essences have been devoured. But if you look around we are never in any danger, we are safe, we have to analyze ourselves and know that we are okay. Addiction is controllable and only us can decide when that small red object is meaningless and no longer will rob from our lives.
This painting represents my view of people. From the exterior, we may seem twisted, hard and cold but in reality, we are surrounded by the color purple which represents power. We have the power to conquer anything, we are tough as diamonds. We are valuable and equal and at the same time, we shine with our individuality. We all need love.
